At the end of January, I will be starting classes at SFSU for a Masters in Public Administration.

weeeeeeeeeee!

what a load off my mind, finally not having to wait anymore, and so exciting! This course of study strikes such a chord with me - getting into nonprofit management really seems like a great match for me. I am really looking forward to having a meaningful career path begin to open up in front of me. I can't wait! Oh, and to actually be studying something that truly excites me? What a concept! Certainly didn't happen in my chosen college major, sadly.

two months of freedom, and time left to get my life in order, so I am 100% ready to dive in to this. and two months to get in lots of good quality time with people before I probably become a hermit with my homework. catch me while you can!

No other school in the country can make that claim. The field hockey team won the ACC Championship on Sunday afternoon.

That's all, I just wanted to share.

memed - 8 things

ok, due to my own pouty big mouth (i asked for it), here's a meme that got started on tribe - at least, that's where i saw it first. so here are the 8 things about me:

- I have a love of heights - I will climb up as high as I can just to look down, peer over the edge of cliffs just to get that rush, and always always always pick the window seat. There is a board nailed into the fork in the very top of a tree outside my parents’ bedroom window that I installed many years ago so I could sit up there for hours and read and look out over the countryside.

- I ran a summer camp for 4 years, starting in 6th grade. Some girls in school thought it’d be fun; I actually took the idea and ran with it. We put on plays for the parents, went on field trips, did arts and crafts, swam in the pool - it was pretty fantastic. Then I went off to boarding school and my mom had to do most of the prep work so I stopped doing it.

- My necklace collection is well over 100 pieces strong, constantly growing, and requires a 2×4 pegboard to display them all. I even made a couple of them myself!

- I was in a sorority. It’s colors were light pink and white. A sorority. Pink. Do you have any idea how much fucking pink I dealt with in college?!?

- I spent 3 years in marching band in college too. Go ahead, laugh. I only stuck it out the 3rd year because I got a mostly free 10day trip to Rio out of it. And I played the trumpet, so it lease it wasn’t some pansy instrument!

- I’ve found my attention span to last about 3 years - that camp I ran, high school, pursuing my Psych major (bleck - turned to art instead), marching band, sorority life (I dropped out senior yr). San Francisco (4+) and Burning Man (4th yr this yr) have been the only things to buck this trend so far. I see that as a sign to stick around while the gettin’s good!

- I’m deaf in my left ear. I passed out after giving blood freshman year of college, fractured my skull, spent 2 unconscious days in the hospital during which time the nerves in my cochlea died, 2 weeks confined to bedrest at home, and got back just in time for finals, which I didn’t have to take, as I’d been given the summer to complete my classes. So instead I partied (with painkillers!), dyed my hair blue and green, and freaked everyone out by insisting on sliding down railings, rolling down muddy hills and generally showing no regard for any further head injuries. (I’ve also found my left nostril doesn’t smell things really so much anymore either).

- I can bust through a Word Scramble like nobody’s business - i think it might have something to do with some mild dyslexia, runs in the family. But not only do I switch letters within words pretty often, I’ll switch up bits of phrases. Example: Someone asked me how I was doing many years ago, and instead of saying ‘good’ or ‘not bad’, I said ‘Got bad.’ I do that shit all the time.

oh and I'm supposed to tag 6 people now to do the same thing... but I'm not gonna - if you wanna do it, lemme know and i'll tag your ass. yes I will.

One such one recently was through work, and simply involved going to one of the restaurants we represent and taking a pretty picture of a cocktail. It was one tough job, so strenuous, I'm still recovering. Didn't get paid or anything, but i got to leave work early and get a free cab-ride home. Taint bad.

I do get tired of feeling like my country is a festering lump of corruption and plastic circling the drain. So it's nice to hear the UK recognize that we actually are bettering the world in some way through our existence.

"Americans - wealthy and not so wealthy - are giving their dollars away by the lorry load. And the rest of the world has a long way to catch up."

Also makes me feel good to know that being philanthropic is a trait recognized in many Americans - I know plenty of us do give a great deal, including myself, but being in the bubble of San Francisco, it's nice to hear that this trait is not necessarily reserved for a few select pockets, but can apply to the citizens, and our country's foundation, as a whole.

so when I turned my phone on this morning, I had a voicemail. Since the phone was off, no record of who it is from. It goes a little something like this:

recorded male voice: goood morning...
record break.
new voice: you have been a bad monkey!
record break.
another new voice: stuttering son of a bitch! bastard! douchebag! twot!

end of message.

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

While amusing, it is certainly a mystery. I remembered seeing http://www.monkeyphonecall.com/ but I don't think they do this sort of thing. It sounds like bits of movie lines spliced together. And "stuttering" is my best guess for what gets said there.

Who oh who is this funny and creative and random monkey??

It is saved for the next 2 weeks on my phone if anyone wants to hear it.

I stayed in bed for another hour and a half! got another cycle of REM sleep in, felt much more refreshed and in charge of my own life (shhh - let me believe!) Called in and said I overslept - no biggie.

I saw an Asian little person on the bus. And that doesn't happen every day.

I decided to count the number of bicyclists wearing helmets on my commute to work, as getting a helmet is on my to-do list. Being a big dork, I was strangely really pleased with the result: exactly half of them were wearing helmets. like exactly. 13 out of 26. I guess I should wish more of them were wearing helmets... but the exact 50% result was just cool.

Meeting this morning we had to get muffins for, but then they realized it was happening somewhere else. Free muffins!

so a friend offered free ego rubs, and so i said sure, hit me. and he gave me a really nice one.

"Many people are willing to propose ideas and are then content to let others sit back and do the work. You propose an idea, and then start doing whatever's necessary to make it happen. Your creativity, enthusiasm, and uncomplaining, "let's do it" attitude kept me motivated at work days when I was feeling overwhelmed.

Plus you totally rock the playa dress. Fuckin' great costumes."

This totally makes me feel good and great, especially from someone I don't know all that well, but think highly of. After reading the rubs he gave to some of his other friends though, it really makes me want to shift to coming across less as a workhorse and motivator and a bit more on the loving, kooky, good-times friend side. I mean, both is good, sure. But I miss being silly and lighthearted.

I think I've forgotten how to have meaningless conversations and how to relish in unproductivity. Something to work back into the rotation...
